Abhorrent! Scurrilous! Unfounded!

“We think [Brown’s] comments are unfounded and incredibly damaging to the reputation of the clu. We think it’s scurrilous and that’s unacceptable and we’ve put it in the hands of our lawyers to look at and we’ll be taking action if necessary…His comments are abhorrent.”

Melbourne Storm chief executive Brian Waldron demonstrates that hell hath no fury like an NRL club worried about its brand. Waldron was responding to comments by St George Illawarra coach Nathan Brown, who told his players to respond to Storm tackles with violence. Waldron declared:

“We’ll answer to anyone at the NRL who wants to pass judgment on what we do, but when people start making claims that are defamatory to the brand of Melbourne Storm and the individuals, we think it’s about time we did something about it and we’re not going to put up with it any more.”

So there. Daily Telegraph readers were not impressed. As “Richo” from Burleigh responded:

“Ninety per cent of Storm players are nothing more than thugs. And if it’s not flowing their way, they carry on like 12-year-old schoolgirls. They are very poor sports.”
