“It seems as if he is in pursuit of infamy and, if that’s the case, perhaps he should be taken off air. People find him offensive and inappropriate.”

Calwell MP Maria Vamvakinou on controversial Footy Show pundit Sam Newman, who made a lewd pun involving the Tasmanian economic development minister Paula Wriedt. Referring to an invitation to Wriedt to appear on the show, Newman said, “worthy of coming on, her”.

Tanya Pilbersek, Federal Minister for the Status of Women was not impressed.

“No matter what women achieve, some people apparently still see them as sex objects. The public response to Sam Newman’s outburst shows that most appreciate how stupid and shallow his comments are.”

Wriedt herself dismissed Newman’s comments as “stupid an inappropriate” and said she’d been flooded with emails from people disgusted by Newman’s remarks.
