“So bereft is the Liberal party of talent they’re thinking about that clodhopper. My nickname for him was thallium – a slow-acting dope.”

Former prime minister Paul Keating on Peter Costello. He expressed the hope that Costello would be elected leader because it would be good for Labor:

“I mean, in Labor Party terms, I hope he does [become Opposition leader] because it makes it a better pitch for us. But in national terms to have such a nong – and he is, in policy terms, he is a mouse – back, just speaks volumes about the Liberal Party.”

Apart from referring to Costello as a “nong”, Keating also said he had no imagination and no courage, and that his memoirs would probably be “as dull as he is”.
