“Two women came in and said ‘We’ve got to get rid of this drongo’. I said I’d be happy to help. He’s just a dusted-off cowboy from Camooweal.”

Mount Isa news agent Larry Ferris responds to calls by mayor John Molony for “beauty-disadvantaged” women to move to the town and find happiness. Federal MP Bob Katter defended Molony, saying he was a “national hero”:

“The town is desperately short of women. We just haven’t got women here. He’s highlighted the problem and the way he’s said it, he’s got national publicity. He’s just letting people know it’s good fun to be a woman in Mount Isa. If he’s got to take a few brickbats on the head that won’t bother Molony.”

Katter also said he saw nothing wrong in descriptions of Moloney as a “redneck”:

“We are all rednecks up here. We don’t carry it around as a badge of shame, we carry it around as a badge of honour.”

But local women are not impressed with Moloney’s comments. State MP for the Mount Isa electorate, Betty Kiernan, suggested that Moloney go to etiquette school. “What do these sorts of statements say about our community?” she said. “It’s horrifying that in this day and age a public figure would say such things. What era is he living in?”
