“He had to be shamed into it. We wrote to everyone in the ALP and he was losing credit with backbenchers. If he thinks you can do him political damage, he’s much nicer.”

Emergency workers comment on new NSW Premier Nathan Rees, who they say has to be threatened with adverse publicity before he does anything about anyone’s problems:

“He was more interested in getting to be premier. He would turn up at disasters because he was interested in getting his picture in the papers.”
