The Art of the Australian Insult

A cavalcade of talentless hacks

“JOHN Dean (Letters, 15/9) pleads that if anything we need more, not fewer, states. A brilliant suggestion! I remember being told at school that Australia boasted the admirable figure of one politician (OK, slash public servant) for every 30 people when you include local councils. The most governed country in the world, I thought to myself proudly.

Despite some of the collateral drawbacks associated with creating a few more states, like, for instance, the added salaries/superannuation payouts, the laziness it perpetuates in the electorate by allowing people to have a bob each-way in keeping the federal/state hamster wheel of inactivity spinning and, last but not least, the cavalcade of talentless hacks it will continue to install in high places, we should nonetheless pursue our laudable obsession with over-governance. There’s a place in the Guinness Book of Records at stake, for goodness sake!”

John Skaro, South Yarra, Vic, letter to The Australian.
