“This is economic vandalism dressed up as responsibility.”

Ben Spies-Butcher lecturer in economy and society, Macquarie University, letter to the SMH, in response to revelations by NSW Premier Nathan Rees that planned infrastructure investments will need to be scaled back because the state would risk its AAA rating. In the words of another SMH reader, “Is there no depth of incompetence this Government will not sink to?”

Veronica Le Nevez of Bexley writes:

“Nathan Rees says the State Government will do whatever it takes to maintain the AAA credit rating. Apparently that includes letting the greatest city in Australia go to ruin. Hospital upgrades, computers in schools and infrastructure are expensive, but they are necessary, and if Mr Rees can’t come up with a plan to deliver them, he has failed as premier. I don’t want Sydney to become the lousiest city in Australia with a AAA credit rating.”
