“He had the chance to strike his own path. Instead, he has continued the politics of populism, sticking with discredited, unaffordable and ridiculous policies. Similarly, his attempts to argue, in the face of all evidence, that bank funding costs have not increased substantially in recent weeks has jeopardised Turnbull’s economic credibility. Such sophistry, while it may gain him some short-term popularity, means his economic pronouncements must be treated with a grain of salt.”
