“WE now read that Barack Obama’s senior advisers have drawn up plans to lower expectations for his presidency if he wins the election, amid concerns that many of his euphoric supporters are harbouring unrealistic hopes of what he can achieve. I don’t understand. This is the man whom Oprah Winfrey has dubbed “The One”. This is the man who spoke of “the moment when the oceans stopped rising and the planet healed” when he won the nomination. This is the man who told us “we are the ones we’ve been waiting for”. Is Obama now telling us that the audacity of hope is nothing more than audacity of hype?”

Richard Shankland, Pymble NSW, letter to The Australian.
