Why being in traffic is like being in love

“Congestion is a concern for all Sydneysiders and if you think you are in traffic, you are in traffic. It’s not a relative concept. It’s no good for me saying, ‘Oh, it’s much worse in New York or Paris.’ It’s like being in love. If you think you are in love, you are in love. If you think you are in traffic, you are in traffic.”

A corruption-resistant state

“If Premier Nathan Rees ever decides to resign from Parliament like his predecessors, he can go straight into a new career as a stand-up comedian. I laughed out loud at his comment that the ICAC report into the scandal in Wollongong meant that NSW was a “corruption-resistant state”.”

Colleen Abela, Rouse Hill, letter to the Daily Telegraph.

The Hogwarts school of economics

“It’s at this point that we start to see why a literature degree might not be the best preparation for running the state, because blind faith in the AAA rating reflects what might be called (with apologies to J.K. Rowling) the Hogwarts school of economics. It involves a lot of fooling about with magic wands and spells, but not much in the boring mathematical line.”

Michael Duffy, who does acknowledge that Rees “is not the first man to have applied the Harry Potter approach to being premier.”

Rather the Taliban than the Silvertails

“Premier Nathan Rees would like all NSW residents to get behind Manly in this week’s NRL grand final against the Melbourne Storm. Given that most of us would prefer to barrack for the Taliban than the “silvertail” Sea Eagles, I don’t like his chances.”

Arlys Baker, Burleigh Waters, Qld, letter to The Australian.

“This is not Rome. The people do not want circuses, they want services that work.”

Peter Wilkosz of Byron Bay writes to the SMH to comment on plans by the Labor government to spend $90 million on a V8 Supercar race in Sydney’s Olympic Park – a race that many residents do not want. Other writers are not impressed either:

“This latest in a long list of decisions to ignore the loud resistance of the community shows that Nathan Rees is continuing the ALP culture of deafness.” Kate Rowe, Ashfield.

“Since when did NSW have $90 million to spare to subsidise a wretched car race? I thought we were just about broke.” Jennie Owen, Baulkham Hills.

Could it be Michael Costa in a wig?

“Nathan Rees believes something big and furry is roaming Sydney’s west. Could it be Michael Costa in a wig?”

Bill Carpenter, Bowral, letter to the SMH comments on the NSW Premier’s interest in a panther-like creature that is believed (by some) to roam wild west of Sydney.

“I’m filthy about it”

“I’ve got to say I’m filthy about it. This is the second time this has occurred in a relatively short period of time, and I want to get to the bottom of that today.”

NSW Premier Nathan Rees comments on a computer glitch which forced the closure of the M5 tunnel for the second time in three months.
