Calwell MP Maria Vamvakinou on controversial Footy Show pundit Sam Newman, who made a lewd pun involving the Tasmanian economic development minister Paula Wriedt. Referring to an invitation to Wriedt to appear on the show, Newman said, “worthy of coming on, her”.

Tanya Pilbersek, Federal Minister for the Status of Women was not impressed.

“No matter what women achieve, some people apparently still see them as sex objects. The public response to Sam Newman’s outburst shows that most appreciate how stupid and shallow his comments are.”

Paul Hunt of Engadine in a letter to the Sun-Herald describes Paul Vautin and Sam Newman \of the Footy Show as

“flag-bearers of a blokey culture that inculcates lewd, inane and boofheaded comments in the name of entertainment  and often at the expense of women. For years, this mish-mash of football news, lagged entertainment and so-called pranks has wreaked havoc on peple who are disadvantage in some way.”
